Last week’s “Meet the Candidates” story had a number of errors and omissions I believe it is necessary to correct.
When referring to my teaching experience, The Times only stated that I was an adjunct college instructor and substitute taught at a “myriad of private schools.” I substituted at over a dozen high schools, and 11 of them were public schools. Many were similar in demographics to our schools in Fountain Hills.

The Times also completely omitted the fact that I taught full-time for two years as the primary honors and conceptual physics teacher at Nazareth Academy in Western Springs, Ill. The Academy is similar in demographics and size as FHHS, but whose student performance as measured by college entrance exams was significantly higher than FHHS. This provided me with the experience to see what’s possible to do for our students and the potential I’d hope to achieve in our classrooms, especially in STEM instruction. Some might think that’s worthy of note to those comparing candidates.
While other candidates had their school committee experience described, mine was completely omitted. I served on the Finance and Building Committee for my three high school, 9,000 student district, and used my five years professional experience in assessing, designing and budgeting for school facility renovations and upgrades to serve the community. I reviewed and critiqued budget and spending for the district as well on this committee. I also served on my school’s Quality Improvement Community Oversight Committee, using my skills and experience as Professional Quality Improvement team leader and Quality Assurance Manager, critical experience for improving our schools in Fountain Hills.
I believe these corrections and inclusions will better help voters distinguish qualifications of candidates. If you have any further questions, please contact me at southlandedwatch@yahoo.com.
