The Fountain Hills Coalition kicked off its third annual “Above the Influence” poster contest on Jan. 17. The contest is open to all middle school students who live in Fountain Hills. The theme for 2017 is “You Only Live Once,” or “YOLO.”
Coalition Executive Director Shelly Mowrey said she believes that recognizing certain influences, both positive and negative, makes it easier for teens to make important choices about who to hang out with and whether or not they try drugs or alcohol.
As part of the contest, students will create a poster depicting a message on how they stay above the negative influences that may lead to the use of drugs and alcohol in their lives. This year’s theme, “YOLO,” refers to what students do now to live their best possible life and what they can do for their future.

Cash prizes are awarded to first-, second- and third-place winners of each grade (respectively $200, $100 and $50).
The contest is sponsored in part by the Verne C. Johnson Family Foundation. All first-place winners will also have their artwork showcased as pizza toppers at Papa Murphy’s Pizza. The contest ends Friday, Feb. 3. The contest received 130 posters last year and, according to Mowrey, judges had a difficult time choosing from all the creative, thought-provoking entries they received.
“The talent and creativity students bring to the contest each year is amazing! We are excited to see what this year brings,” Mowry added. “We have achieved wonderful cooperation from the art teachers in town.”
One of the contest’s requirements is that posters must somehow incorporate the “Above the Influence” logo into the artwork.
The Above That Club, sponsored by the Fountain Hills Coalition, is an afterschool extracurricular program open to sixth through eighth-graders at FHMS.
The club meets once a month to discuss and role play ways to stay above the negative influences of alcohol and drugs in addition to playing games and having fun.
