Code amendment allows firearms in parks
Posted
In order to comply with state law, the Town Council has voted to amend Town Code to allow firearms within town parks.
Town Code has prohibited firearms in town parks, which was in conflict with state law.
All cities and towns are required to adhere to the new firearms laws adopted by the Legislature, according to Town Manager Ken Buchanan.
Town Attorney Andrew McGuire said the town will need to update park signs that say rules indicating that regulation of firearms is “as permitted by state law.”
Discharging a firearm within a park would still be prohibited.
Resident Richard Davidson, who identified himself as a new citizen and a school teacher, said he was concerned and shocked by the law.
“I have concern for the safety of town residents and kids,” Davidson said. “This is very dangerous and I am concerned that this allows for demonstration of arms.”
Councilwoman Ginny Dickey was the only council member to vote no on the amendment.
“The Legislature refuses to respect the wishes of the council and people of the town,” Dickey said. “I will not support this.”
One other council member indicated they were voting yes “reluctantly.”
