Concern over religious views at Fountain Hills Town Council meeting

Legal claim filed by a resident

At the Fountain Hills Town Council meeting Sept. 16, about a week after the assassination of Charlie Kirk, some members of the council felt moved to make statements about Kirk and his faith and objectives with his Turning Point USA organization. However, since that meeting, some in the community have expressed their concerns over the overt religious overtones of those comments during a public, government meeting.

Fountain Hills resident Bethany Culp filed a notice of claim with the Town of Fountain Hills on Nov. 4, based on discussion held at the Sept. 16 meeting. She named Mayor Gerry Friedel, Vice Mayor Allen Skillicorn and Councilmember Hannah Larrabee as well as the Town of Fountain Hills in her complaint.

Culp is “seeking compensatory damages and declaratory and injunctive relief for violation of the Arizona Constitution …. and …. for violation of the Establishment Clause contained in the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.”
