It was a huge week for Fountain Hills athletics, with the high school girls soccer team taking first at state, the middle school softball squad ending their season as champs and the wrestling squad taking sixth place overall at the 48-team state tournament.
I’ve covered sports here in Fountain Hills for a decade now, but big finishes to successful seasons never really get old.
The week of wins for Fountain Hills started off on Monday afternoon, Feb. 8.

The Middle School softball team took the field against Northwest Christian at the tail-end of another undefeated year. Combined with last season, this latest victory puts the team at an impressive record of 23-0-1.
Rather than edge out a victory in this final showdown, the local ladies decided to pile on some added insurance at the plate, going on to claim a 16-3 victory in a four inning, run rule shortened game.
Almost making it look easy, the middle school Falcons brought home a second season title in a row.
As for the high school soccer team, the Lady Falcons took on Palo Verde Magnet on Saturday, Feb. 13.
This was the team’s third trip to state in a row, with the local squad going undefeated in section play this season before heading into the big tournament.
While the Falcons won their 2014 state run, last year’s final showdown was a real heartbreaker. The extremely long match went into penalty kicks, which is where the Falcons were finally toppled by Walden Grove.
It looks like the Falcons had no intention of letting history repeat itself this year, however, as the local ladies managed to come away with a 4-2 win over their opponents to earn the state title over the weekend.
Unfortunately, I was home sick, so I’ll just have to live with the crushing regret of missing such a big match until they make another run on the title next season.
No pressure, ladies.
As for the wrestling squad, this weekend marked the season-ending state tournament for Falcon grapplers as well.
As mentioned above, Fountain Hills pulled off a big feat by coming in sixth out of a field of 48 teams.
Out of 10 local wrestlers taking part in the season-ending event, five came home with medals, including a second place finish for junior Parker Kauffman.
So consider this your friendly reminder that there is a lot going on in local sports, and these kids really put on a show when they play in front of the hometown crowd.
That was certainly a strong finish for the winter season, but things are only just now getting started for the spring.
Both baseball and softball are set to get rolling in the next week, with the remaining spring sports kicking off shortly. Those include golf, tennis, track and field, as well as the return of sand volleyball.
So keep your eyes either on our own sports pages or check out falconathletics.org to keep up to date on the season ahead. There should be some big games worth visiting the local fields for and, who knows, maybe another section or state title is on the horizon.
