Councilman Nick DePorter has announced that due to family and work obligations he will not be seeking a second term on the Town Council.
“I’ve decided with mixed emotions to not seek a second term on the Fountain Hills Town Council at this time,” DePorter said in an email to The Times. “It was a very tough decision for me, as I have thoroughly enjoyed my time representing our community as an elected member of the council.
“I’ve enjoyed meeting many friends and neighbors throughout my term and I’m proud of the town’s accomplishments during my time in office.”

DePorter said his job is also taking up more of his time.
“I currently serve as the U.S. Public Policy Manager for LinkedIn and in the last year my professional responsibilities (and travel) have greatly increased,” he said. “My family and I look forward to having a little bit of time back to spend together, especially my little ones Jack (7) and Abbie (4).
“It has been a tremendous honor to serve this fine community and I wish great success to the future mayor and Town Council members.”
With DePorter stepping aside that leaves only one incumbent, Councilman Alan Magazine, on the ballot for the council primary election in August.
The deadline to submit paperwork and nominating petitions to have one’s name on the ballot is 5 p.m. today, May 30.
As of this writing only Magazine, mayoral candidate Ginny Dickey and council candidate Mike Scharnow had completed the process and turned in petitions.
Councilman Cecil Yates is expected to resign his seat on the council at the time he submits as a candidate for mayor.
Next week The Times will have the names of all the candidates seeking the office of mayor and one of the three council seats up for re-election. We will continue coverage through the summer with forum events and questions for the candidates.
Any candidates not elected outright with the August primary will be part of a runoff with the General Election in November. The new council will take office in December.
