Council meets Thursday
Posted
Fire department issues will be high on the list of items to be addressed by the Town Council Thursday evening.
Chief Randy Roberts is scheduled to make a presentation regarding an evaluation by the department’s Public Protection Classification (ISO).
Auditors recently surveyed the department to determine an updated classification number.
The council will also consider an amendment to the town’s contract with Rural/Metro for its fire protection services here.
The current five-year agreement expires July 1. The proposed amendment would approve the first of two two-year extensions permitted by the contract.
That would allow the current agreement to remain through June 30, 2016, with the addition of amendments to update the document related to an equipment list, ambulance facilities lease and include a provision for the town to receive cost reimbursement when a firefighter/paramedic is needed to ride-along with an ambulance transport.
Other items
The council will also be considering a new development fee schedule that will comply with changes made in state law in 2011. The town will be eliminating all but two development fee categories.
As of August 2014 the town will no longer collect fees for law enforcement, library/museum and streets. Open space and general government categories had previously been eliminated.
The town will continue to collect fees for fire protection and parks and recreation.
The proposed fee for fire protection is $300 per dwelling unit for residential construction, and about 25 cents per square foot for commercial and industrial construction.
The parks fee is $1,301 per unit for residential with no commercial or industrial fee.
This reduces fees from the current total of more than $8,000 to about $1,600 for residential construction.
The new fees, if approved, would take effect Aug. 1. If the council does not approve the new fees, all development fees would be eliminated as of Aug. 1.
Also on the council agenda is a proposal by Arizona Propane to install a 6,000-gallon propane tank at its facilities on Shea Boulevard. The tank would be used to dispense propane on a retail basis for vehicles, barbecue tanks, barbecue and other portable uses.
The tank would be a 12-foot diameter sphere set behind an eight-foot high block wall. The fuel would be dispensed by an attendant.
The site is located on the south side of Shea at the east end of Kern Plaza. Arizona Propane has offices in the plaza.
An existing small building that was a drive- through coffee shop will be used for the attendant.
The council will also hear a report on the laws passed by the Arizona Legislature during the past session and potential future issues. That report will be made by representatives of the League of Arizona Cities and Towns.
The council meets Thursday, May 15, at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers at Town Hall. The meeting is open to the public.
