Council members continue to seek town recognition of Charlie Kirk

Vice Mayor Skillicorn proposes statue in Kirk’s honor

Fountain Hills Vice Mayor Allen Skillicorn has asked for a future town council agenda item for consideration of a statue to honor Charlie Kirk, the political and religious activist assassinated in September at a rally at a university in Utah, where he was challenging students to debate him.

Skillicorn had previously asked twice for consideration of naming the Fountain Hills Community Center for Kirk but could not obtain the interest of a third council member to support an agenda item. At the Oct. 21 council session, Councilmember Gayle Earle joined Skillicorn and Councilmember Hannah Larrabee in asking for the discussion at a future meeting. Earle did ask to have a question addressed but was unable to have any response due to potential open meeting conflict. Friedel responded to a comment from Councilmember Brenda Kalivianakis saying any questions and concerns may be brought up during official consideration by the council.

Mayor Gerry Friedel indicated the council has a “full plate” of items to be considered on the remaining agendas for the 2025 calendar year. He said he does not expect the item to be on the agenda before January.
