Council permits propane station

The Town Council has given its unanimous approval for a special use permit to allow installation of a 6,000-gallon propane gas tank at a site on Shea Boulevard at the town’s eastern boundary.

Arizona Propane had requested the permit to build a retail gas dispensing facility adjacent to the company’s corporate offices on Shea.

The council had questions about the safety of the facility and was satisfied with a report by Assistant Fire Chief/Fire Marshal Dave Ott. He said the facility should be as safe as any gas station as long as it operates in compliance with standard safety practices.

Ott noted that attendants at the propane facility will undergo training that could actually make it safer than a gas station.

There were also questions regarding ingress and egress to the fueling site. Architect David Ross said the existing drives are more than adequate for customers, even RVs up to 30 feet.

Senior Planner Bob Rodgers said the application meets all the requirements for a special use permit outlined by the Zoning Ordinance. Also, the Planning and Zoning Commission voted to recommend approval.

The proposal calls for the installation of a 12-foot spherical tank set behind an eight-foot block wall. The plan calls for a landscaping upgrade on the site to soften the tank’s appearance.

The company is located at 17251 E. Shea Boulevard, the last lot on the south side of Shea before reaching the town boundary.

The plan calls for the use of a former drive-through coffee kiosk to be used for a pay center for the propane sales. An attendant will man the center and fill the propane containers.

The site will be accessible to RVs and vehicles converted for the use of LPG as well as barbecue tanks.

The wall and the tank are to be painted neutral colors similar to the adjacent office buildings to help the tank to blend in.

The site will operate Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and a sales volume of about 20 customers per day is anticipated. Hours are expected to be extended to Saturday during the winter season.
