Council to hear dog park recommendations

Posted

The Community Services Advisory Commission is proposing that the Town Council consider upgrades at Desert Vista dog park in an effort to reduce neighborhood noise.

The council will consider the CSAC recommendations when it meets Thursday.

There are four proposals including a primary step that would install visual barriers between the off-leash areas of the park.

One barrier would be placed on a three-foot chain-link fence that sits atop a two-foot wall between the small dog area and large dog space.

The proposal includes visual barriers along the fence at the entry areas for the separate exercise yards. Those entries are side-by-side along Tower Drive on the park’s north end.

The belief is that if the small dogs and large dogs cannot see each other they will not run along the fence and bark. The visual barrier may also help to reduce the noise.

The commission is also suggesting new rules for the park including that dog handlers must control continuous barking. Users must also conform to park hours and be respectful of nearby residents including loud talking and yelling by dog owners at the park.

There is a proposal to add or improve visibility of signs stating rules and regulations.

Communication with dog owners may be improved with fliers being distributed at different locations including Town Hall, veterinary offices, groomers, pet stores and the Chamber of Commerce.

The commission is suggesting a $1 increase in dog license fees to help fund the improvements. The ADOG organization has pledged $1,000 to the effort, per Dennis Contino.

The commission is recommending the council allocate up to $7,500 for the improvements.

There is no suggestion to change the park’s hours of operation.

The recommendations come after the town received complaints regarding noise disturbing neighbors across a wash from the dog park.

The Town Council will meet Thursday, March 19, at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers at Town Hall. The meeting is open to the public.
