In a brief special session that lasted no more than a minute or two on Nov. 21, the Town Council made official the results of the Nov. 5 election.
By a two-to-one margin voters in that election gave the council authorization to sell $8.2 million in bonds to finance the reconstruction of Saguaro Boulevard.
Information provided by the Maricopa County Elections Department showed that 6,937 ballots were cast on the question. Of those, 4,551 were in favor of the bond, while 2,226 were opposed.
There are 16,031 registered voters in Fountain Hills, according to the county, indicating a fairly respectable 43.27 percent turnout for the election.
The council also used the meeting to express official appreciation to the Citizens 4 Saguaro committee that promoted passage of the bond.
Bob Thomson, chairman of Citizens 4 Saguaro, said the best advertisement for passing the bond was the condition of the roadway itself.
Thomson also said he was appreciative of town staff for the job they did in providing information that was asked for.
“All the members of the committee contributed all that they could to the effort,” Thomson said.
Councilman Tait Elkie gave his thanks to the committee.
“Your group did a great job in getting the facts out there and educating the public,” Elkie said. “The voters responded to that.”
The town will be seeking an engineering firm to prepare construction documents for the project and financial staff will make preparations for selling the bonds early next year.
