Council votes on drones

The Town Council has approved a staff recommendation to designate Desert Vista Park as the only site authorized by the town for recreational launch of unmanned aircraft, particularly drones.

Rules established by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Arizona State Legislature are the primary regulations addressing the use of drone activity.

The state law provides that requires a community with a minimum number of parks to specify at least one to be used by drones.

By establishing Desert Vista as the park the town is in compliance with state law related to drone activity.

Commercial drone use is regulated by the FAA and state.

Staff reported that a section of the main soccer fields at Desert Vista will be designated for the drone activity when it is not being used for other activity. Signs in all parks will be modified to reflect the new code requirement.

Desert Vista Park is off Saguaro Boulevard between Desert Vista and Tower drives.
