Rick Watts’ recent letter was full of lofty American ideals — "healthy democracy,” “diversity of viewpoints,” “inclusive, transparent and responsive governance,” fostering “environments where all voices are welcomed and deliberation is informed and respectful,” and “embracing the diversity of perspectives.”
His use of the word inclusive was curious. If anyone on the left of the political divide uses that word, which is a Kryptonite-like trigger for those on the right, they are vilified as progressive and woke. Is Councilmember Watts turning progressive and woke?
Now to the concepts of “diversity of viewpoints.” fostering “environments where all voices are welcome” and “embracing the diversity of perspectives.” Does the local Republican Club, who “welcomes all Republicans and like-minded Independents,” to their meetings, follow those principles? How about “calling the question,” a favorite tool of Skillicorn and Larrabee, whereby all discussion is stopped and an immediate vote is taken? Is that an “environment where all voices are welcome” and one that “embraces the diversity of perspectives?”
