Couture: There was no reason to oppose theater liquor licenses
Councilmembers Skillicorn and Kalivianakis supported a meaningless, and ultimately failed, attempt to prevent our beloved Fountain Hills Theater from obtaining town liquor licenses for their opening nights this season.
The Theater is an established 37-year-old institution in Fountain Hills.
Skillicorn accused the theater of skirting the law. Kalivianakis suggested their opening night receptions for patrons could become disorderly, drunken parties, undeserving of granting more than one license at a time in case they slip up.

There was no reason to vote to deny the approval for receptions. The theater has zero history or evidence of misconduct. It was false to accuse this non-profit business of skirting or in any way avoiding state law.
Councilwoman Toth patiently explained the entire licensing process, one she is familiar with in her capacity as events coordinator for the Chamber, but to no avail.
So, who exactly is creating “mischief?” Certainly, it is not the theater or its patrons. The licenses passed 5-2.
