Cyclovia small but energetic

Cyclovia, an inaugural celebration spotlighting healthy activities and lifestyles, did not attract as many participants April 13 as the town, Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau anticipated.

About 750 attended the day’s activities on the Avenue of the Fountains and a portion of Saguaro Boulevard, estimated Mark McDermott, director of the Fountain Hills/Fort McDowell Visitors Bureau.

The streets were closed to motor vehicles to encourage families and individuals to walk, bicycle, skateboard and exercise outdoors.

Activities began at 10 a.m. and ended with three concerts at the Fountain Park amphitheater.

“It is a great concept of what Fountain Hills is all about. We can make it into something big,” said McDermott.

The Chamber, its Visitors Bureau and town were the lead groups in scheduling the event in conjunction with the American International Trails Symposium at the Radisson Fort McDowell Resort.

Competition from other regional events might have been responsible for the low turnout, said McDermott.

“Bike Week, Scottsdale Culinary Festival, Country Thunder music festival, and the televised Masters Tournament might have kept people away,” said McDermott.

“It was our first time out.”

He thought organizers would repeat the event next year. Follow-up meetings will be held to make a final decision.
