A strong and fast moving storm rolled across Fountain Hills Monday afternoon, dumping about half an inch of rain and uprooting dozens of trees in its wake.
Rain started falling between 2 and 3 p.m. with as much as .87 inch recorded in the McDowell Mountains above town. Across the residential areas of town a quarter to a half inch fell. At Fountain Hills Fire Station No. 1 the rain gauge collected .59 inch. There was .35 inch in the rain gauge outside The Times office on Laser Drive.
At Fountain Park there was .33 inch in the rain gauge and wind gusts were recorded at 55 miles per hour.
Those gusty winds uprooted dozens of trees through the downtown area including one being salvaged in the Avenue of the Fountains median.
Trees continued to fall along Saguaro going south. One tree covered a car in a parking lot near Saguaro and Kingstree boulevards. Another fell across the driveway at La Fuenta condos at Saguaro and Gunsight. That tree fell onto a parking cover and damaged a vehicle.
Other trees went over near the Fountain Hills Theater at Saguaro and Rand, leaving town crews scrambling to pull branches out of the traffic lanes.
Sheriff’s deputies closed Saguaro Boulevard for a time between Palisades Boulevard and Parkview Avenue due to flooding. McDowell Mountain Road at the wash east of the Middle School was also closed for a time due to a flash flood.
