Dark skies focus for Fountain Hills economic development

Quarterly update from director

Fountain Hills Economic Development Director Amanda Jacobs told the Town Council at a November meeting that with the International Dark Sky Discovery Center quickly coming out of the ground, her department is working to bring astro tourism into focus for the community.

The Discovery Center would appear to be less than a year away from opening its doors and the town wants visitors to think about the destination as a gateway to the universe. Jacobs said she has been working with Vicky Derksen, host of the Night Sky Tourist podcast and member of the Fountain Hills Dark Sky Association to initiate new programs surrounding the town’s dark sky recognition.

Derksen, also a member of the Star Dudes, who provide regular sky tours at the Adero Resort, and she organizes stargazing hikes and outings for the Sonoran Conservancy of Fountain Hills.
