Dark skies topic at Four Peaks Rotary

Representatives of the Fountain Hills Dark Sky Association recently shared with Four Peaks Rotary members and guest the importance of preserving nighttime views of the sky.

The Fountain Hills Dark Sky Association is dedicated to educating the community about the advantages of smart lighting and protecting the community’s unique dark sky. Protecting our night sky requires help from the community:

*Use fully shielded light fixtures.

*Use only the amount of outdoor light needed. There is no scientific evidence that increased outdoor lighting deters crime.

*Use warm lights. DO NOT use bright lights. Lights with CCT of 3000K (Kelvin) are okay.

*Avoid light trespass -- don’t let lights shine on neighbors’ properties. -- Turn on outdoor lights only when needed or use timers or motion detectors.

*Have fun stargazing, on your own or at a star party sponsored by the Fountain Hills Library and Astronomy Club (fhastronomy.org). Visit Dark Sky at FHDarkSky.com for additional information.
