In last week’s letters to the editor, Ann Schweers expressed concern that Muslim, Jews, Buddhists and other religions were not invited to Fountain Hills’ National Day of Prayer.
She needn’t worry. The National Day of Prayer is for all Americans of all faiths. In fact, the prior week’s article about the National Day of Prayer expressly invited all residents and neighbors to attend the affair. Nowhere was it stated that only Christians were invited.

I agree with Mrs. Schweers that our government should be about serving all citizens. People of faith are also American citizens. Therefore it is quite proper for the United States government to also recognize them.
The National Day of Prayer does not in any way muddy the line separating church and state. The reality is that church and state are separate, even though the Constitution does not say there should be a separation of church and state. The National Day of Prayer is an activity that not only is completely harmless but also beneficial.
I believe that in America there is room for both the religious and the nonreligious. Atheists, who have the freedom to not believe, need to be a little bit more tolerant of people who are religious.
