What is this mumbo-jumbo, word salad that Cecil Yates gives us as his excuse for not stepping down in time to allow someone to run for his vacated seat? There is no law against it. He can resign anytime he wants.

By saying that he won’t resign until after April 30, he is telling us that we don‘t deserve the right to vote for his replacement. In fact, by waiting until the deadline for a candidate to file to run, he is effectively blocking anyone else from running. The council must appoint someone to a vacated seat if it becomes vacant within 30 days of the petition signature deadline. He appears to want his replacement to be hand-picked by the six members of the town council instead of by the voters of Fountain Hills.

Two years ago Cecil Yates was asking for your vote to serve a four-year term as town councilman. After serving only one year of that term he decided to throw that away for a chance to become mayor. It is another slap in the face to voters if he doesn’t allow us to choose his replacement.

For him to say that his opponent is afraid to run against a sitting councilman for one extra month is laughable! She has been out in the community letting people know where she stands and asking for residents’ input since February and at three of four scheduled “Town Talk Tuesdays.”

Now, you tell me which candidate represents more of the same and which one is out there asking for your opinions? For example, Ginny has proposed creating a citizens oversight committee for the property tax if it passes. Yates was on the covert committee recommending the lagoon. You decide.
