Demographics

The sooner our town accepts the age demographics of it the sooner it can expand its economy. The median resident age is 53.9 years. More than half of our population is between 50s and 90s.

There are over 76.4 million baby boomers, some already coming on line these will be the people moving to our town. They are the ones who can afford it. Most families cannot afford to move here. Housing is too expensive. Median home cost is $359,000. Cost of living compared to the rest of the country is 36.5 percent higher. One of the few new housing starts in town advertises a 1565- square-foot two-bedroom for $332,900. They at least know the market to attract.

Towns and cities all over the country are seeing drops in enrollment and they are closing schools. There is nothing wrong with a town with an older population. In fact those towns have a higher median house hold income. Ours is $75,083. The state per capita is $46,737. There are thousands of towns and cities in our country that flourish with an older population. There is no truth that a town with declining school age children and families will not thrive.

The town should be looking into type of business that would cater to our age population. Like Reflections Hospice and Palliative Care. Builders who would build townhouses, condos, and patio homes. Home care services for the elderly and handicapped. Interactive retail and medical education centers and handicap equipment stores.

Physicians, dentists, health care-related business. We will never have an industrial or manufacturing base in our town. As more homes are built, more service companies will be needed.

The topography of our town is not suitable for tract, inexpensive affordable houses. That is why we cannot attract families.
