Disc golf spins to success

The 26th annual Memorial Championship, presented by Discraft and the Professional Disc Golf Association, took place over the weekend, battling through plenty of wind and rain with nearly 500 professionals and amateurs taking part in four days of competition.

The event was hosted out of the Fountain Park disc golf course, as well as Vista del Camino in Scottsdale.

This event kicked off the PDGA 2014 season, offering a purse of more than $50,000 and bringing in athletes from all over the world.

Disc golf spins to success

The 26th annual Memorial Championship, presented by Discraft and the Professional Disc Golf Association, took place over the weekend, battling through plenty of wind and rain with nearly 500 professionals and amateurs taking part in four days of competition.

The event was hosted out of the Fountain Park disc golf course, as well as Vista del Camino in Scottsdale.

This event kicked off the PDGA 2014 season, offering a purse of more than $50,000 and bringing in athletes from all over the world.

Three members of the local Fountain Hills Disc Golf Club managed to rank high enough to bring home a portion of the purse this year, including Dan Ginnelly, Eric McCabe and David Taylor Jr.

Ginnelly took first in the Grandmasters division with McCabe finishing 24th in the open and Taylor taking 46th.

After three round of play and a round of finals, Paul McBeth won the men’s open at a -35. John McCray took second at -31 with Drew Gibson taking third at -30.

Paige Pierce took first for the women’s open at -13. Catrina Allen was second at -3 with Valarie Jenkins in third at +5.

Kenneth Climo led the men’s Masters, followed by Patrick Brown in second and George Smith in third.

Trina Lettig won the women’s Masters, followed by Sheila Kirkham and Emina Weaver.

As stated above, Fountain Hills’ Dan Ginnelly won the Grandmasters, followed by Joseph Mela and Eric Rainey.

Finally, John Kirkland took top honors in the Senior Grandmasters division with Harvey Brandt in second and Leroy Jenkins in third.
