OPINION — I remember being hired for a retail job years ago, and being told the company had a zero-tolerance policy about two types of theft. The first, literally swiping something from the store without paying for it. The second type I was warned against was stealing company time.
The company expected me to work while clocked in. Because if I were clocked in and not working, the company was paying me for nothing, thus I was stealing. When we look back to our current political climate, that second type of stealing will be revealed as our biggest sin. I hope it’s not our downfall.
Comparing Fountain Hills with a retail store, we “hired” our Town Council to work here. We expect them metaphorically to keep the aisles clean and well stocked, and to make sure no expired milk is in the cooler, etc. Instead, a select few have been stealing company time with nonsense about DEI, and English-only silliness, taking away a reporter’s table, and memorializing a podcaster.
