Downtown overlay not quite ready for Fountain Hills Town Council

Planning and Zoning delays a recommendation to council

The Fountain Hills Planning and Zoning Commission asked staff to do a little more work on a proposed Downtown Overlay Zoning District before it considers a recommendation to the town council. At its March 10 meeting the commission voted to continue the discussion until its April meeting, now scheduled for Monday, April 21.

The proposed amendment for the downtown overlay is considered the first step toward implementing a downtown economic strategy approved by the town council last summer, according to Development Services Director John Wesley.

The proposal replaces two existing overlays that include a planned shopping plaza and an entertainment district. The new plan has three districts downtown with an adjusted boundary. An Innovation District has been added to the map to encompass the area bounded by Palisades and Saguaro boulevards and La Montana Drive. This area is already largely developed with medical services.
