Dudash: Our search for truth

In Greek mythology, we encounter the story of Diogenes, the man who endlessly searched the Earth for truth. Diogenes is famously depicted as carrying a lantern in broad daylight, looking for an honest man but never finding one. He was a major figure in the philosophical school of cynicism, which still permeates the present.

I felt this aura of cynicism when I read a letter in the Times Independent by Stephen Gay, “Skillicorn’s actions are an embarrassment to this town.” The comments are what you would expect from the title. But as Skillicorn promised, when faced with the ethics rules being used as lawfare against him, Skillicorn sued the town. That is his right under our legal system, and we must respect those constitutional rights. In response, Gay states, “By filing suit against fellow councilpersons, the mayor, staff and outside counsel, he has stooped so low he can no longer be considered a true representative of our community.” Not so fast, Stephen!

I do not know Mr. Gay, so I did a Google search and quickly discovered that he is a member of the Fountain Hills Democratic Club. Their stated mission is “to encourage and support Democratic candidates.” Well, shazam! Everyone is certainly entitled to their political views and affiliations, but a little honesty about those views might be in order. Just looking at the membership roster, it doesn’t seem likely that Mr. Gay will ever be criticizing Mayor Dickey or Councilmember Grzybowski. This explains why the scales of opinion seem to tilt so sharply to the left. Shazam, again! Now we know.

In the end, like Diogenes, we must resolutely walk past the political darkness of leftist politics in our search for truth.
