Early returns for Town Council race

The initial, unofficial election returns indicate Fountain Hills voters have re-elected Councilman Henry Leger, along with political newcomer Nick DePorter to the Town Council.

For the third seat Alan Magazine holds a 286 vote lead over Lina Bellenir, with an undetermined number of ballots yet to be counted. Town Clerk Bev Bender said all of the ballots dropped off or cast on Election Day, Tuesday were not counted with the initial results. Bender said they were busy on Election Day, but she does not know how many votes were cast. Regardless of the final tally, it does not appear there will be a need for a run-off in November.

Leger was the top vote getter with 2,806; DePorter received 2,717; Magazine 2,488; and Bellenir 2,202. Mayor Linda Kavanagh, who was unopposed, received 3,210 votes.

Fountain Hills resident John Kavanagh apparently wins the Republican nomination for the Arizona State Senate seat in District 23. The initial tally showed him with 12,968 votes to 11,246 for Jeff Schwartz. The Democratic challenger for the Senate seat in the November General Election is Paula Pennypacker.

Incumbent State Representative Michele Ugenti was apparently re-elected to her third term. Jay Lawrence likely wins the second seat in the House. There is no Democrat challenging in November for those seats.
