Edward David Meyers quietly passed away March 4 in Ahwatukee. Dad was a kind and generous man whom I never heard a single complaint from in my entire life. He was born in Philadelphia on Dec. 15, 1925 to Sophie and Samuel Meyers. He was their second and last child, following his sister, Eleanor.
After serving in the Army artillery in the Philippines and Okinawa, he returned home and began a long career with Esso, also known as ExxonMobil today, while attending Temple University at night earning a degree in accounting. He advanced over many years to several middle management positions, where he was loved and respected by all of his employees. Also, while employed there he met and married the love of his life for 64 years, Helen Ida Seitz, soon becoming the father of his only child, Lawrence Edward Meyers, a resident of Fountain Hills the past 38 years.
Dad loved sports, particularly baseball, where he managed Little League over the years and remained the president of Media Little League long after his son was grown. He retired from Exxon in 1987 and moved to Arizona to join his son, Larry as the CFO of Southwest Television for 20 years, handling the financial aspects of the nationally known sports production company for the likes of CBS, ABC and ESPN, among others. This was perfect for a man who loved sports and had passed that passion on to his son.
Helen and Ed traveled this great country that they loved, visiting every state. In the last days of his life he was asked if there was anything that he wanted to do and didn’t. His quiet reply was, “no.”
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, and is survived by his son Lawrence and his wife, Dawn; two grandsons, Blake and Brent, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Military services will be held Saturday, April 6, at 10:45 a.m. at Southeast Valley Bible Church, 710 E. Williams Field Road.
