Shadow Rim Girl Scout Camp north of Payson hosted 40 Girl Scouts from Fountain Hills recently. The girls spent time ziplining, canoeing and practicing archery at the encampment.
Encampment is basically a neighborhood. They take seven troops up there, and they camp, in either cabins or non-heated with non-electrical cabins. Erika Percic, Fountain Hills Girl Scout Neighborhood Manager Troop Leader 6445, talked about the fun experience and strong bonding the girls made on the trip.
“We did ziplining, rock wall climbing and archery,” Percic said. “We basically teach them outdoor sports, and it’s a way for the different troops to get together and, kind of a become more of a cohesive group and, get a chance to camp out. We have annual trip basically every year, for our encampments.”

Every ranking and age was involved with this trip. The older and higher ranking girls helped lead and teach the younger scouts the ways of being a true Girl Scout.
“It’s all the different troop levels from Brownies all the way up to Ambassadors,” Percic said. “The older girls are in high school, and we had girls as young as eight years old. They stay with their troops and stuff as far as cooking arrangements. “Then with the older girls, . . ., and they take more involvement in the camp in running things and teaching the younger girls.”
Overall, bonding, learning and creating joy among the girls are the main aspects for the encampment trip. Percic said, “It’s basically the activities, games and scavenger hunts to help bring the neighborhood together.”
