Fast & Furious 6 is a lot of fun

The summer movie season is all about over-the-top action and explosions, and Fast & Furious 6 certainly delivers the goods.

What I find most interesting about this particular high octane series is that it proves the law of diminishing returns can sometimes take the form of a sine curve. Basically, the law states that the more you have of something, the less value that something will have. That’s usually the case with long-lived movie series. They start off great but, the more of them you get, the worse those movies get.

It was the same for the Fast and the Furious franchise. The series fine at the start, and then got worse the more of those movies we had shoved down our throat. But then something unexpected happened. Fast & Furious 5 turned out to be a good action flick, swinging that downward slope of diminishing returns in the upward direction once again. Even more unthinkable, Fast 6 is yet another fun romp, overflowing with ridiculous scenarios and cheesy one-liners, but done so in a spirit that makes the whole package a lot of fun.

The action sequences are explosive, the car chases are thrilling, the characters are likable and, though ridiculous, the story is decent enough to tie the whole adrenaline-filled fiesta together.

Fast & Furious 5 stopped taking itself too seriously and chose to make the action and the charismatic stars the center of attention, which is why it turned out to be such an enjoyable action movie. Fast 6 follows the exact same formula, resulting in yet another sure bet for summer movie-goers looking for a mostly mindless, but wholly entertaining good time.

A seventh film is currently being shot after being teased at the end of Fast 6. Let’s just hope the series’ sine curve isn’t quite ready to take another turn towards the bottom.
