Father's voice

I cannot, in good conscience as a writer, remain silent while the Neo-Nazis (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterparti - outlawed in Germany in 1945) spread their hateful ideology here.

I have a moral duty to speak out loudly as the daughter of a Polish tank commander who was killed in action fighting a Panzer Division. He is buried in the Polish Cemetery near the Canadian Cemetery in France, but I am very much alive thanks to his spilled blood, and that of the brave Americans who also died defeating such immoral Fascism.

One cannot stand silently at their crosses and stars of David, and not weep loudly as outrage sticks in one’s throat! Sixty million souls were tortured and killed during the Holocaust. My family suffered and my life changed. It took me years to write their story because it hurt too much. My mother could not tell me all the sad details because she choked up while tears fell from her blue eyes.

My family suffered and my life changed. It took me years to write their story because it hurt too much. My mother could not tell me all the sad details because she choked up while tears fell from her blue eyes.

But my father spoke to me from his grave. His wartime photos were my only legacy, which finally guided my hand to write his story: “As Long As We Still Live,” (Kiedy My Zyjemy). Oh, how young they all were – so full of life, laughter and, yes, hatred for an abhorrent ideology destroying the world caused by a madman.

But I grew up innocent, not understanding this hatred until I saw it on television this week. And I vowed that I would do what I could, in my own small way, to stop it. My father, from his silent grave, and I vociferously from my pen, have done our part. Have you?

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” –Edmund Burke.
