Many of us progressive residents of Fountain Hills feel as though we’re living in an alternate universe where unprecedented and frightening things are happening to our country. Other residents cling to the false illusion that all is well, Trump has been sent by God, and Sheriff Joe was a wonderful patriot and protector.

It’s so hard to understand the vast discrepancies in beliefs until you factor in “fake news.” While Trump regularly attacks the mainstream media as such, the real purveyors of lies, deceptions and conspiracy theories are Trump himself, along with his favorite “news” sources – Fox, Breitbart, Info-Wars and other Alt-right stations and commentators.

A perfect example of the propaganda being spewed is the statement by Rush Limbaugh that hurricanes Harvey and Irma were just hoaxes made up to promote the idea of climate change. Unbelievably, many accepted this insane conspiracy theory just as they believed there was no Sandy Hook and questioned the source of the 9-11 attacks.

In poetic justice fashion, Rush Limbaugh has now been forced to evacuate his own home because of Irma. Does anyone think Rush will now admit he was wrong? I doubt it. Facts no longer make any difference.

People in other countries have long looked at the US in disbelief and amusement for our election of Trump but now that amusement has turned to fear for the survival of our world.

Anyone anxious to do something to bring sanity, safety and equality back to our country is encouraged to join with other likeminded people at the monthly meeting of the FH Democratic Club every second Thursday of the month at the Community Center. Food, non-alcoholic drink and social time will start at 6 p.m. with meeting/speakers to follow. You’ll be surprised how many progressives live here. Over 129 attended the first meeting!
