Fountain Hills Unified School District average classroom sizes are in for the 2013-14 school year with figures at about the same level as in recent years.
“Grades one through three are about what they were last year and kindergarten is one to two students higher on average,” said Superintendent Tom Lawrence.
“Figures are about the same as previous years at all other levels.”
At McDowell Mountain Elementary School, the average class size for kindergarten this year is 25.2 students with 23.8 in first grade, 26.2 in second grade and 24.4 in fourth grade.
Four Peaks classes have 28 students in fourth grade classrooms with 29 students in fifth grade.
Only core classes are reported at higher grade levels with the Fountain Hills Middle School hosting 26 students in sixth grade classes, 27 in seventh grade and 30 in eighth.
At the high school, English core classes are at 26 students with 25 in math, 24 in science and 27 in social studies.
“These numbers are typical of what we’ve seen in the last few years,” Lawrence continued.
“We try to keep them below 30 in the fourth through eighth span and we’re there. The high school is a different animal. Depending on the class, we have some that might have higher numbers and some that have far fewer numbers, but the core classes are the figures we focus on.”
Lawrence stated that these figures are still under the board guidelines for maximum class sizes, which are 26 for kindergarten, 28 for first through third and 31 for fourth and up.
