The story of how this show came to be is nearly as touching and funny as the musical itself.
The show’s author and director, Peter J. Hill, recounted that he had been visiting his mother when she brought out a small box of sheet music composed by Hill’s maternal grandfather, Gus Schneider.
Hill’s mother explained that her father had written all the music, and some of the songs had been optioned, but not recorded, by the Andrews Sisters. She asked if he could do anything with the music.
He took the music, listened intently to the delightful tunes and ultimately created “The Big Radio Broadcast of 1941” around the songs.
Hill never met his grandfather; Gus died the year Hill was born. Hill said now he finds a deep and meaningful connection to his past through Gus’s music.
The play is produced by Copperstate Productions. It stars Sarah Brisco, Hill, Thomas Niels Mangum and Barbara McBain.
Tickets are $30 for adults; and $12 for children under 17. Call 480-837-9661, ext. 3, or visit fhtaz.org to purchase.
