On the recommendation of his superior officers, Fountain Hills firefighter Derick Deroche has been named Firefighter of the Year in Fountain Hills by VFW Post 7507.

Post Commander Phil Yin made the presentation to Deroche on Jan. 8 at Fire Station 1. Yin said the VFW recognizes outstanding public safety personnel on a worldwide basis, and Deroche’s award would put him in line for higher recognition.

Fire Chief Randy Roberts said Deroche came to the Fountain Hills Fire Department two years ago as a new firefighter.

His immediate supervisor, Capt. Todd Brunin, said Deroche goes “above and beyond” each and every shift to provide the best care he can to those who are in need.

“Derick has that natural ability to display kindness, compassion and respect that makes up the best part of being a public safety provider,” Roberts said.

Due to his excellent EMT skills and knowledge, Deroche has been selected to attend paramedic school that will begin this month.

“We are proud to have Derick on our team, and we are very fortunate to have him serving in Fountain Hills,” Roberts said.
