I am a frequent visitor to Fountain Hills. In fact, I have been coming here regularly since 1972, when my parents were written up in The Times as being the 14th residents!
One thing I’ve loved about Fountain Hills is not only the beauty of the area and the fabulous Fountains…I have also loved the huge American and Arizona flags that greet your visitors as they enter on Saguaro Blvd. It always fills my heart with patriotism.
For many years I especially liked to drive in at night. I could see the flags from far away and they looked glorious and welcoming in the night sky.

Now, however, a light no longer shines on these flags and they are left to fly in complete darkness.
The U.S. Flag Code, Section 6(a), states, “It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.”
Please consider once again to light up those beautiful flags to pay our immeasurable respect.
