Florence Ellen Cherewick, 92, of Fountain Hills, died Tuesday, Sept. 24.

She was born to the late Thomas and Mabel Stephenson, March 4, 1921, in Windsor, Ont., Canada. Ellen graduated from Redford Union High School, Redford, Mich., in 1938. She married the late Andrew Cherewick in 1942, and they lived together in Southfield, Mich., West Millington, N.J., Grand Rapids, Mich., and Daytona Beach, Fla., before relocating to Fountain Hills in 1992.

During high school, Ellen worked at Pat’s Coffee Shop where she met her husband, Andy, and Pat taught her to make the best potato salad in the world.

After graduating from high school Ellen attended the Burroughs Office Machine School where she learned to use the comptometer. Jobs at Nelson Plumbing and Ford Motor Company in Detroit followed.

Later, Ellen was a homemaker and licensed Realtor in Michigan. She also did vision testing in the public schools of Michigan, and became a licensed practical nurse at the age of 50.

Ellen spent many days volunteering at the Presbyterian Village Nursing Home. In her younger years, Ellen was very proud of her role in the founding of St. Martin’s Church in Detroit, recalling accounts of seeing Henry Ford and many other important people at St. Martin’s functions.

Ellen stayed active with the Senior Center of Fountain Hills, cherished her time with family and friends, loved to read and knit, thoroughly enjoyed her computer, and loved playing Solitaire and Words With Friends on her iPad.

Ellen is survived by three children; Tom, (Lorraine), of Red Lodge, Mont., Steve, of Fountain Hills; and Bob, of Findlay, Ohio. She also is survived by four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Those wishing to remember Ellen can do so by making a donation to the Fountain Hills Library for the purchase of books in her memory. Services are pending.
