Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church (SOTH) in Fountain Hills recently participated in the “Grace in the City Heat Respite Project” at Grace Lutheran Church in central Phoenix.
SOTH members were asked to provide personal items for the homeless. Toiletries, non-perishable snacks, underclothing and t-shirts were collected to distribute at the church.
The Heat Respite program is held at Grace Lutheran from June through August. In addition to providing a cool setting in the Hope Fellowship Hall, guests receive assistance with clothes, hygiene kits, help in finding a job and obtaining medical care.

For the past 30 years, the church has offered a pancake breakfast and Bible studies every Sunday and throughout the week, the church works with AZ Face Network, opening the church campus for heat respite, health services, hygiene care, showers and a barbecue food truck on Mondays.
Grace Lutheran is the oldest Lutheran church in Arizona, according to a press release. Built in 1918, the church works to prevent heat-caused deaths among the homeless population and other vulnerable populations.
