Fountain Hills clarifies absence of license plate-reading cameras

Disputing inaccurate claims online

With the line between security and infringing upon privacy growing smaller, license plate recognition cameras, otherwise known as Flock cameras, are the latest in discussion around the country. While other cities around the Valley have them in use, the Town of Fountain Hills does not.

Growing concern among residents has caused town staff to inspect all cameras in use locally, verifying there are no Flock cameras being used in town. Public Information Officer Mike Pelton said the concern arose from a crowd-sourced website that appeared to have misidentified equipment in Fountain Hills.

On the DeFlock website, it lists one flock camera in town, located at Saguaro and East Palisades Boulevards. It also lists two reconyx cameras (used similarly as game trail cameras for game and wildlife) with one along East Mohave Road and the other at Surama Road and East San Marcos Drive.
