Fountain Hills council seat will have recount

Count finished but numbers still unofficial

The Maricopa County Elections Department has finished counting ballots from the Nov. 5 General Election and there needs to be a recount to determine the third seat on the Fountain Hills Town Council.

The numbers released as of 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 18, have incumbent Councilwoman Peggy McMahon with a seven-vote edge over challenger Mathew Corrigan. Recounts are automatic where there is less than a half percentage point difference in the ballot count. In this case the difference is .03%.

A special meeting of the Town Council has been scheduled for 5 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 20, in the council chambers at Town Hall. At that time the council will consider a resolution to certify the vote, as well as authorizing the filing of a petition in Superior Court for an order requiring the recount. It is uncertain when the recount will be completed. The swearing-in of the new council is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
