Fountain Hills Dark Sky Preservation ramping up efforts

Maintain town’s International Dark Sky Community designation

The construction of the International Dark Sky Discovery Center in Fountain Hills is an obvious physical reminder of the efforts in the community to preserve and educate the population about light pollution and its negative effects on people, plants and animals.

There is also work going on behind the scenes as the Discovery Center aims to open its doors to the public later this year.

Fountain Hills Dark Sky Preservation is now under the International Dark Sky Discovery Center’s 501c3 and functions as an operating committee overseeing the Dark Sky Festival, Dark Sky Champion program and community education/awareness efforts, according to John Craft, vice president for International Dark Sky Discovery Center board of directors and lead for the Preservation group.“We are raising awareness of the advantages of keeping our skies dark,” Craft said. “We are not lighting compliance cops.
