OPINION — My husband and I moved to Fountain Hills 11 years ago, and during that time we have proudly told friends, family and neighbors what a wonderful community this is. We have enjoyed the festivals, community events, local businesses, and small-town atmosphere that make Fountain Hills special.
That is why I have been disappointed to see our mayor and town council elections becoming increasingly dominated by the kind of political rhetoric associated with state and federal races. The abundance of politically-charged signs throughout town sends a message that concerns me: that national politics are taking center stage in elections that should be focused on local leadership and solutions.
The responsibilities of a mayor and town council are not the same as those of legislators in Washington. Local elected officials are responsible for creating a long-term vision for our community, making thoughtful development decisions, setting budgets, maintaining infrastructure, supporting local businesses, and ensuring that Fountain Hills remains an attractive place to live, work and visit.
