OPINION — For me and many others I've spoken to, there is still an unanswered question of why public funds and resources were used to defend and resolve a lawsuit brought by a resident against Gerry Friedel's misconduct, in his personal capacity.
I wrote the following to the mayor and council on May 11: “As residents' representatives, you each have fiduciary and statutory obligations to ensure that public funds are not used to advance the private interests of elected officials. Did you accept that obligation? That seems to clearly be the issue here.
“That resident's claims were not based on anything Friedel did in his official capacity and were unrelated to his status as an elected official. The town was not named as a defendant in the action.
