On Saturday, Sept. 13, members of the Four Peaks Rotary Club in Fountain Hills joined together to participate in the Salt River 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, held at the Salt River Fields baseball stadium in Scottsdale.
The event is held each year to honor the firefighters and other first responders who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
Participants climb up and down every set of stairs in the stadium two times, the equivalent of the 110 flights of stairs in the World Trade Center towers, according to a press release. Each person wears a badge bearing the photo and name of a firefighter in whose memory they make the symbolic climb.

This year, Four Peaks Rotarians were inspired to lend support after club members Frank and Joanne Colella, both native New Yorkers, spoke at a recent meeting about their experiences on 9/11 and their participation for the past four years in the Memorial Stair Climb.
They agreed to form a team, with nine members signing up to make the climb, including Pam Carlson, Frank Colella, Joanne Colella, Hillary Mackowski, Heather Perreault, Debbie Romano, Gina Scheller, Daniel Weiner and Kristin Weiner.
Additional Rotarians and supporters came out to cheer them on from the stands. They also met up on the field with members of the Fountain Hills Fire Department, who rise to the challenge in hot weather conditions while wearing their full, heavy gear to honor their fallen brethren.
Firefighter fundraiser
The Four Peaks Rotary Club team raised a total of $1,718 that will go to support the families of local fallen firefighters and the FDNY Counseling Service Unit, through programs with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
The club was delighted to learn that it ranked eighth in fundraising among the 101 teams that participated in the event.
Afterward, everyone was tired but proud to have participated in such a worthy endeavor that exemplifies the Rotary commitment to “Service Above Self.”
“I couldn’t be prouder of the work Four Peaks Rotary is doing in Fountain Hills — particularly by supporting and participating in the Salt River 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb,” said Four Peaks Rotary Club President Nick Proctor. “I’m honored to be associated with an amazing group of Rotarians.”
