The Fountain Hills High School girls basketball team is starting, and there’s a lot of excitement around the team. Last season, the girls performed to their highest level. Earning a 23-5 record and 12-0 in region play, earned them a first place standing in their region. The Falcons went deep into the playoffs, reaching the quarterfinals but lost to Show Low when the two teams faced each other.
This season brings in positive expectations and deep playoff experience. The Falcons will only have three returning seniors, Kaylee Lewis, Shania Rivera and team captain Seilah Smith. Smith was second in points, first in rebounds and steals. She was a focal point for the offense and will take bigger role now, leading the team as captain. Smith also shot a impressive 41 percent from the three point line.
“Seilah wasn’t vocal on the court, she did her job on offense and accomplished her tasks on defense with no fuss,” head coach Amanda Baca said. “(She) was the one who came to me and said she’s ready to be a leader on this team and use her voice more to help motivate the other players.”
