Fountain Hills museum should remain in space we built for it

OPINION — In 1998, Fountain Hills taxpayers approved a $3.7 million dollar bond to construct a building for the specific public purpose of providing a permanent home for a public library and the L. Alan Cruikshank River of Time Museum.

The bond represented a decision by voters to collectively invest in two community-defining institutions, one providing the unencumbered opportunity to gain and share knowledge and the other to preserving our shared history.

The residents who supported the bond could not have envisioned a time where the town would threaten to evict the museum from its home using the Arizona Constitution’s Gift Clause as its justification.
