Fountain Hills resident cultivates passion for cacti

Alvin Hollander shows off his desert garden

Since retiring from his career in post-secondary education, Fountain Hills resident Alvin Hollander has found a fulfilling way to spend his time.

Starting at seven in the morning, Hollander heads into his backyard with his shovel, cart and a five-gallon bucket to dig up rocks, rake the dirt and plant a variety of cacti.

Every day, he removes several pails of rocks out of his garden which he repurposes into meandering walkways and a wash system to contrast the earth tones.
