Fountain Hills resident honored by Mayo Clinic

Dr. Mary F. Burritt broke barriers in the medical field

Breaking barriers in the medical industry, Fountain Hills resident Dr. Mary F. Burritt was the first female to direct a clinical laboratory at Mayo Clinic and the first female faculty in the hospital’s clinical chemistry department.

For her years of dedication and leadership, Burritt was recently honored with Mayo Clinic’s Distinguished Alumni Award and her experience in the decades leading up to this achievement was nothing short of inspiring.

Burritt obtained her undergraduate chemistry degree from Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa, and her Ph.D. in biochemistry at the University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago in 1974. Following her Ph.D., Burritt completed a two-year post-doctorate in immunology research followed by a two-year fellowship in clinical chemistry, both at Mayo Clinic. Her career was spent in Rochester, Minn.
