Qasimyar lawsuit

Fountain Hills School Board considering options to pay off debt

Need to cover $2 million

Fountain Hills Unified School District is developing a plan to repay a $2 million debt it owes the county due to an error made by the Maricopa County Assessor’s Office.

Discussed during the Aug. 7 business meeting, options include utilizing FHUSD’s unspoken funds, selling tax anticipation notes or possibly taking a loan from the County Assessor. As this was a discussion item, no action was taken and the matter will be voted on at an upcoming meeting.

Referred to as the Qasimyar lawsuit, a group of property owners claimed the assessor’s office incorrectly appraised their homes between 2015 and 2021. The cause of this discrepancy is that the properties changed classification from an owner-occupied residential home to a rental or secondary home, or vice versa.
