Freshman Bella Peiro has been thrown into the fire and the same number of appearances on the plate as the next two Fountain Hills High School softball pitchers combined so far this season.
Junior pitcher Shania Rivera bruised her knee in the 28-10 loss at Payson on March 4, so Peiro pitched the next three games with junior Sammantha Hughes as relief.
“It’s kind of fallen on Bella’s shoulder to step up, and she’s doing well,” head coach Randy Bragg said. “She’s a freshman. These girls are extremely inexperienced, but she’s throwing strikes. For the most part, the other teams just put the ball in play.”
