Fountain Hills to move forward with artwork policy

Would create standards for additional murals

The Fountain Hills Town Council majority gave direction to town staff to proceed with developing policy regarding murals and zoning ordinances during its meeting on Feb. 17.

The town currently has agreements for artwork on utility boxes, but Development Services Director John Wesley said those would be expanded to include those on private businesses and fundings. Policy and ordinance changes will then go through the Planning and Zoning Commission before being brought back to the council.

Councilmember Peggy McMahon expressed her concern with additional murals and the possibility of the town’s “unique visual identity” being diluted. She said the painted utility boxes do their job of highlighting what is important to Fountain Hills’ culture, such as the night sky and fountain.
